IU women's basketball rides hot second half to beat Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE -- A day after the IU men's basketball team upset Purdue at Assembly Hall, the women completed the intrastate sweep on the road. Indiana overcame a flat start and rode a dominant second half to defeat the rival Boilermakers 69-46. Here are three reasons IU stayed hot.For much of the first half, Purdue contained Indiana's two biggest weapons.

On the perimeter, Purdue's guards stayed tight on Grace Berger, bringing extra help when she curled around ball screens, preventing her from getting to her preferred spot for midrange jumpers. Purdue's pressure on Berger and the rest of the IU backcourt, taking away their room to operate, made things difficult for an offense that thrives on getting into its sets.But there was only so long the Boilermakers could contain two of the best players in the Big Ten.

She went into the break with a team-leading 13 points, her most in a game since New Year's Day against Nebraska. Moore-McNeil has been a contributor all season long as a facilitator and defender. Against Purdue, she provided a performance IU badly needed.A sellout Mackey Arena crowd was engaged in the first half. Purdue played with energy and made enough shots to enter halftime down 5 points.

The second half began, and Indiana emphatically stomped out any of the Boilermakers' hopes of an upset with a 19-2 third quarter. Even beyond getting Holmes more involved, the Hoosiers did close to everything right after the break. They stayed with Purdue's ball handlers on the perimeter. They contested shots at the rim and didn't allow easy looks. They made 4-of-10 3-pointers after being mostly contained in the second half.
