OPINION: 'Raising Ohio’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2026 would mean 1.6 million Ohioans are paid more fairly for their work,' writes Michael Shields, a researcher for Policy Matters Ohio.

Updated: Jan. 02, 2022, 12:15 a.m. |Raising Ohio’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2026 would mean 1.6 million Ohioans are paid more fairly for their work, writes guest columnist Michael Shields. Guest columnist Michael Shields is a researcher for Policy Matters Ohio.

So, on Jan. 1, Ohio’s minimum wage was adjusted from $8.80 per hour to $9.30 for most workers. While it’s still woefully below what people need to make ends meet, the wage will at least maintain the purchasing power it had in 2020. And unlike the inflation spike -- which is expected to dissipate -- when policymakers allow wages to erode, the harms to working people are much longer lasting.

The increase would boost pay for 36 percent of women and 22 percent of men, as well as 45 percent of Latinx Ohioans, 44 percent of Black Ohioans and 26 percent of white and Asian Ohioans.

Minimum wage is supposed to high school kids and kids in college not work at for a career PS good luck getting anyone to work now days. I like to know were people get there money

Raising minimum wage is an illusion of actionable improvement. Economics 101

Tell me you don’t understand inflation without telling me you don’t understand inflation.

Who are you to dictate what's 'fair'? You are worth what you can produce and the value you provide, not a cent more

The idea that the government minimum wage is relevant is comical. All sorts of low wage jobs have raised pay because of the competitive labor market. Ironically, Amazon has done more to increase pay in NEO than any politician in the past 25 years.

But still not enough.

Raising the minimum wage harms low skilled workers. An employer is forced to higher a high skilled worker over the low skilled one because they have to pay more. This prices out low skilled workers who desperately need income and job experience to improve their career.

Why not $20, that would be even more “fair”

Sounds great. But why should that take until 2026?! 🤔

Just foolish marxist nonsense

Record number of minimum wage increases set for 2022A record 25 states and 56 municipalities are set to raise their minimum wages by the end of 2022. In many areas, the wage floor will meet or exceed $15 per hour. This is what cost-push inflation looks like. Now the question is will the economy do better as low skilled workers now have more income to spend in the economy? I’m excited to see! That would have been great in 2012. 15/hr is NOT a living wage. Fixed dollar amounts are poison to equity. Awesome. Let’s follow up in about 18 months and see how things are going.
