It’s time for conversations about the value of military service | Opinion

U.S. Marines Commandant Gen. David H. Berger writes that military service delivers virtues and values that are important in our divided nation.I joined our military in 1977, two years after the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam. It was a challenging time for our country, not unlike today. We had just ended a long and bitter war, inflation was high, crime and social unrest were rising, and public trust and confidence in the government was on the decline.

I empathize with this generation. Their questions are valid, and we owe them honest answers. And I don’t mean polished talking points from admirals and generals like me. As a nation, we need more parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers and coaches to have candid conversations with young people about the value of military service.

What about military values? Are they consistent with Americans’ own values? Honor, courage, loyalty, integrity and respect are among the values our military prioritizes. These are not just martial ideals but universal, noble values of the sort all Americans aspire to embody. They represent the foundation of who we are as a military. Do we sometimes fall short? Regrettably, we do. But in my opinion, no American institution holds itself more accountable to its own principles.

... as politicians (education) budget cuts, the military was a convenient scapegoat.

Is the military still denying all religious exemptions for needless medical garbage? Are y'all still teaching soldiers how to use pronouns? CMC_MarineCorps did you buy into all this woke BS?

Air Force changed my life in ways I’m still benefiting from 42 years later. No other way to state it.
