For more than a week, Tuluksak resident and subsistence fisherman Nicolai Napoka has been traveling 4 miles down the Kuskokwim River with his smelt dip net.
“It’s been like the first time we’ve been going out for at least a week of doing it. And that’s the longest run,” Napoka said. “I had another phone call saying that Kwethluk was dipping last night, so probably the second run is about to reach here.” “A run means [in previous years] we’ve been dipping for only like two days and they’re all gone. And they just passed, but this is the longest run we’ve been dipping this year,” Napoka said.“They just kind of hang out and wait until spring arrives when the water warms up, and then they move in and spawn,” said Trent Sutton, a fisheries biology professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
