Not long into his freshman year at Villanova University, Mikal Bridges realized something peculiar: He wasn’t ready for college basketball.
“It’s mind-blowing to me. It really is. That’s my baby out there guarding LeBron,” said Tyneeha Rivers, his mother. “He was this skinny kid—and now look at him.” The Suns have the rare opportunity to spring an upset as the higher-seeded team. Their matchup against the defending champion Lakers is tied with Game 5 on Tuesday night, and they will need Devin Booker’s scoring, Chris Paul’s savvy and something from almost everyone on their roster to win twice this week. Star players win championships. Role players win games that win series. And nobody plays a more important role for the Suns than Bridges.
He wants to be far away from the hoop because two things tend to happen once he gets there and both make for excellent offense. The first is that he never touches the ball but remains productive by creating space for Booker and Paul. The second is that he catches a pass and shoots. Rivers said redshirting was one of the toughest decisions of his life, even if Bridges knew it was the right one. He was a gangly teenager who needed to transform his body. And that he meant he needed time. By the time he played his last game in college, Bridges had gained 20 pounds. One day his shirt was off and his mother noticed something she had never seen before. “Look at those muscles!” she said.
But what most people remember about Bridges getting drafted by the Sixers is that they already employed Rivers as their vice president of human resources. A boy from Philadelphia would be sharing an office with his mom. “It was like a dream come true,” she said.
