Biles in particular is being credited with helping break down the harmful stereotype of the"strong Black woman."
"I think a lot of Black women fear penalization for taking time out," Orbe-Austin said."Several people were saying, 'Well, we don't have the space to take time.' And that's ridiculous. is on the highest stage. She has to perform at the highest level. But even at the highest end and on the biggest stage, you need to be able to take care of yourself."
Blackstock added that, while it's a good step forward, it's not enough for athletes to speak up; they need institutions to back them up. "We need to think about how organizations can encourage a culture where athletes feel like they can make this choice," she said."In organizations where Black women are leaders, ensuring that they can come to work as their full selves, that they can be expressive and talk about what they need, and then make sure that they have the resources to lead and the resources to be empowered.
"Hopefully this is an opportunity for organizations to do that inner work and ask, 'Are we supporting Black women within our organization? Because we know they are dealing with an extra layer of stress, because they are Black and because they are women.'"
Simone is already a champion many times over. Don’t try to make it a discrimination thing. Bless her.
So full of shit! Why must you make EVERYTHING about color Simone_Biles never said anything about that. I'm done with Today I hope hodakotb sees this and has something to say about it!! And SavannahGuthrie Today show should be ashamed of this!!!!
We are so very proud of you!
I’m so proud of her!
True!
BS!!!!
Just stop already!!! Give the attention to the athletes who are competing right now! Not fair to them that they are getting no attention. Its the Olympics , focus on that! Let them shine!
Really?!?
Praying that Simone will be able to compete. She has worked so hard all her life. We are cheering for you to first be healthy & hopefully to see you compete. God Bless, You.
Thank you for adding to an already sensitive racial divide NBC. Both sides don't need fuel for this fire.
Please don’t make this a race issue.. who cares what color or sex she is. She needed help in a difficult moment. I hope she gets it. ❤️
OH please! Stop with making everything a racial issue!
Today, you used to be better than this. Please go back to reporting the news on a non biased basis.
The coverage should focus on all the Olympic athletes who are proudly competing to meet their goals that they have worked for in five years. I am getting better Olympic updates on Twitter. I am enjoying all the trail blazing women of color in track and field, basketball, etc.
In my eyes, for what it’s worth, you are a competitor. If I or anyone else has compounded the pressure you are under for being black or being a woman, I am truly sorry for that. I also pray for the day you and all like you can be just competitors. Hold your head high.
so now playing the race card......ok
don't play the race card - You are a champion ...'period'
Oh dear lord …or being the daughter of a drug addict raised by your grandparents..
playing the black lives matter game!!! it’s not always about being BLACK!!! enoughalready
OH MY GOD...that was one of the most ridiculous things I've read in my entire life 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What? Why? 🙄🙄🙄
Wow. Today show was holding back on this one for awhile. Things sure did slow down so let's bring it out now. What a joke today show. Ps how's Matt Lauer doing?
Duh!!!!
Here's something to think about. With our sun being the largest object in our solar system, there's no way the sun can be shining bright up in the sky here in America right now. While it's dark as can be with the moon up in the sky in Tokyo if our earth was really a flat circle.
