William Knight, an emergency medicine physician and critical care doctor at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, will take his post Sunday night at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati. He will be in charge of emergency response during the game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills. As the world learned last year when those teams met, he will perform a job of the utmost importance. Knight will also receive an opportunity to see old friends. “It’s going to be pretty powerful,” he said.
Hamlin and his family began a campaign aimed at getting people certified in CPR. The American Heart Association has seen a massive increase nationally in people taking CPR classes. In the Cincinnati area, the parents of Matthew Mangine Jr., a high school athlete who died after a cardiac arrest suffered while at soccer practice, started a foundation that gave out AEDs to schools. Before Hamlin’s incident, they received a small number of requests for the device.
Professionally, Knight and Pritts live in a world of trauma. Pritts treated three patients with cardiac arrest this past week. But the attention paid to Hamlin’s case separated it from others. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called roughly 10 members of the UCMC medical team on their cellphones; about half sent him to voice mail because they didn’t recognize the number. President Biden called in.Knight and Pritts gave a news conference to update Hamlin’s condition days after the game.
