Nearly 60 years after the FDA approved the birth control pill, women and health activists across America are campaigning to FreeThePill and make the oral contraceptive available over the counter, without a prescription

Nearly 60 years after the Food and Drug Administration approved the birth control pill, women and health activists across America are campaigning to make the oral contraceptive truly accessible to all.

Using #FreeThePill, people took to social platforms including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to call on the government to make the pill available over the counter, without the need for a prescription."#FreeThePill because a) women shouldn't be subjected to outdated, patronising, clinically unnecessary consultations to access their repro rights b) they shouldn't have to go on a wild goose chase to find it at a reasonable price & c) because you can buy viagra over the counter...

— Rebecca Blaylock May 9, 2019 "There are a lot of extra costs that come with getting a prescription for birth control including a doctor's visit, missing work and transportation. We could #FreeThePill and make it available over the counter," tweeted Steph Synoracki, who works at Ibis Reproductive Health, the international non-profit that initiated the day of activism.

— Steph Synoracki May 9, 2019 Read MoreThe organization chose May 9 to coincide with the 59th anniversary of the day the FDA approved the an oral contraceptive as being safe to use. Although the pill is widely available, the United States is among some 20 countries that require a prescription in order to get a monthly supply of the pill. The brand and how frequently you can get it depends on what type of insurance you have and how much you're willing to pay.

We should make condoms free as well.

Pretty sure you need a prescription because they need to be dosed correctly. Birth control pills are not one size fit all. You could make yourself sick with the wrong dose. Doctors should definitely stay involved in that.

Messing with estrogen and hormones has tissue consequences

A danger to women everywhere. Birth control is not a one pill fits all.

AugustaHollywd Better make it free then. The ACA made it free by prescription. Got to love President Obama! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

If I discover the perfect contraceptive, how would I make it as cheap as possible, and more importantly, keep corporate hands off my glorious attempt to make social conservatives as mad as humanly possible? I want to do what that polio-vaccine guy did, how?

Never been a fan How do we lay people understand peope dosages. I ALWAYS HAD TO HAVE MINE ADJUSTED BECAUSE MY SOME WERE JUST TOO STRONG AND MADE ME EXTREMELY ILL.

Shouldn't we first ensure everyone has access to an affordable cancer treatment before spending public money on birth control pill? ProLife

Some states allow them Over The Counter. Ask at the pharmacy.

Do you even realize that FLEA MEDICATIONS for our dogs & cats require prescription

That is too stupid for words. The pills are not one size fits all & not everyone can take them. Irreparable damage could occur before an error was detected.

Definitely

While I think it's s great idea, there are concerns with strokes and high blood pressure. I still think it would be good to check with your Dr. first.

What’s the argument against it? Seems rather obvious.

Uhm, that’s cool and all but they aren’t all the same are they? That’s why you need a doctor to prescribe the right one, correct?

I'd like to know why there are 50 new apps to get men ED pills online, but I still have to schedule an annual appt to get a medication I've been on for 15 years.

Ladies, if you wanna get this passed the 1st time around attach it to a bill to make viagra over the counter.

So in other words, blokes can have a bit of a laugh and put one in their pregnant girlfriends mash potatoes. Hilarity.

it should be considering the present push to reverse Roe. birth control is more important than ever. not to mention it is a fundamental right of women to control their reproductive health.

OUR BORDER AGENTS ARE NOW SICK!!! WHEN WILL YOU PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!

Yeah to facilitate more mindless, irresponsible sex. Why not 🤨

Yes!!! This should have been done years ago.
