On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council voted in favor of an amendment banning wood fires on the sand. One council member calling it 'the preservation of the safe enjoyment' of beach bonfires.

MISSION BEACH, Calif. — San Diego is one step closer to banning certain types of an iconic beach activity: bonfires.

On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council voted to restrict beach fires to city-designated fire rings, banning wood fires from burning on the sand outside of the rings.Councilmember Joe LaCava, who voted in support of the amendment, issued a statement regarding the vote. LaCava said the move is"no ban," and is instead"the preservation of the safe enjoyment of an iconic San Diego beach activity —beach fires.”

“Protecting the community and enjoying our beachfront recreational activities are not mutually exclusive. My recommendation had a broad coalition of support to include public safety—Police, Fire, Lifeguards, and Park Rangers—as well as town councils and environmentalists. Beachgoers will no longer fear stepping on hot coals buried under the sand or breathing excessive smoke.

"Some of my friends have actually, like, stepped in hot coals before because people cover up their bonfire," said Keegan Debever, who was out and about enjoying Mission Beach on Wednesday afternoon. The amendment will not take effect until 30 days after the council's second approval in January.

What's a bummer is all the people who've gotten injured from stepping on people's illegal 'firepits'. They're acting like bonfires are being banned altogether. 🙄 What's being banned is using charcoal to create a makeshift firepits in the sand, then covering it up. 👍

I thought it already banned

SMH. This is one of those things that makes you ask why the hell they ever allowed it in the first place. The fire rings are not decorations. They are for fires you nematodes. No one appreciates burning their feet on the hot coals you buried in the sand. DUH!

Opinion: Maybe San Diego's thinking needs to go off the railsLet’s use taxpayers money to really change San Diego into a world-class city. Listen, it ain't happening. We are a large economy, people will always use their cars whenever they want. People are 100% delusional about mass transit. It ain't happening. This tweet will age well. America in general needs to get on the train train Are you kidding me? eBikes instead of rail infra? Bikes would need $$ upgrades way more often. Would you also close roads to cars to reduce car/bike collision? E.g. putting rail on El Camino would be better than eBikes.
