City spokesperson says work request should have been made through proper channels

A La Jolla resident took it on himself recently to repaint stairway railings leading to Windansea Beach — to mixed responses from locals and the city of San Diego.

Working alone over four days, McGoldrick sanded and scraped off the existing paint and recoated the handrails using commercial paint, he said. During that time, beach-goers and even city employees commended him for the work, he said. “I’ve used the Get It Done app and things don’t get done,” he said. “I knew if it was going to get done, I had to do it. There is too much red tape and the city probably would have said no. And I did a better job than they would have done.”

“Get It Done gets a lot of requests and there are only so many staffers,” Santacroce said. “I understand the frustration of wanting aesthetic things painted, but we prioritize the most important things and most requested items and the stuff affecting people’s safety, [such as] graffiti removal, which is a blight to the community, inspecting trees so they don’t fall down and repairing potholes.”

Good for him. He did a great job. We enable people who trash our beaches and byways and punish this guy? Let’s not.

While the city is building bicycle lanes that very few people use and the potholes are getting bigger, it takes a citizen to paint the staircase to the beach! Grade F for the city, Grade A+ for the citizen painter!

Citizens are going to continue being forced to take essential city services into their own hands as long as MayorToddGloria remains focused on bums, drag shows and photo-ops. Is citizen policing next?

Looks great.

Not all heroes wear capes.

The city response should of been, “We get a lot of requests and have to prioritize items. So thank you for doing this.”

Pretty much what I’m doing with my damn contractors that are taking forever to get crap done. I’m using the supplies they have left sitting in the house and getting it done. It needs to be done. The red tape political crap needs to stop on these things.

fire the 'spokesman' and reward the resident

Can he come fix my broken curb?

Santacroce: let’s let San Diego fall into ruin to appease our glorious communist leaders

Joseph McGoldrick sounds like a stand-up guy. The city spokesperson. Not so much

Thank you! It looks amazing!

Citizens acting for the better good in spite of city incompetence.

Worked for the city. Bought a picture frame for a proclamation I was dropping off. The stores printer wasn’t working so there was no receipt. $12. Round and round with the powers that be. Finally said, “It’s a donation”. Next day new paperwork on my desk, forms for a donation.

Maybe Anthony Santacroce needs to find another job somewhere else?

Nice work!

Good! I'm sure the city wanted to put in a bike lane there instead.

Good for La Jolla. Scripps Ranch has been doing this for several years… “secretly” repainting community signs/fences, sweeping/edging sidewalks and center medians, you name it. There’s a Facebook page to keep efforts organized. Just talk to srilko4

Pot Holes next

This is why we don't need the government.

Good. Only way things will get done in this city. The mayor's office and city council have proven all they can do is virtue signal.

honestly it’s so funny that this guy was like “the hell I”ll do it myself” and then the city got mad… LMAO

Santacroce, just say thank you and move on.

Reported and Fined…they didn’t have a permit, the color wasn’t voted on by committee, it was not put out for bid and it damn sure didn’t meet OSHA requirements.

It would’ve taken 6 city workers a month (with overtime) to “get it done.”

darn - can't read the article but... Taking care of business, using common sense....Looks nice - thanks!

Ask for forgiveness😂

I hope this guy is prepared to get his ass sued off by the public employee union that represents the City's painters. That's sad, but they don't put up with citizens doing their work...

Are we giving the resident a medal?

The city is mad cause some contractor didn’t get to charge taxpayers $50k to do this job.

Perfect example of what is wrong with todays world. The government wants to make themselves the provider of all and be viewed as the only provider of services. We should be applauding people like McGoldrick for taking pride in our city and making a positive difference.

Did you know the bridge in Mission Trails where the man died needs all kinds of environmental studies and will cost over $1M. Anticipated completion late 2024. You could drop a few beams across it and be done with in for $1K in wood and a weekend.

MayorToddGloria would rather spend tax dollars taking care of buns and illegals. Good job by this guy.

Thank you very much Mr. McGoldrick!

Good for him. S.D. would likely say needed port approval.

The mayor has other priorities. The city’s money is being spent on social programs and equality. Bridges, roads, and parks be dammed!

Probably saved the tax payers $100, 000 to do a $1000 job, good work Windansea!

F Todd Gloria! A miserable failure as a mayor and yet another typical liberal DEM politician who have failed San Diego & CA for decades. Wake up CA and vote differently! Otherwise, we will continue to degrade into a 3rd world country!

Oof: 'this is not something that he should have done or something the city is OK with. This resident could have brought this up with his community planning group, attended a meeting, brought it up with his (City) Council (representative’s) office … to advocate for it.”

Word, hopefully more people do good things like this for their communities! Thanks my dude, looks great!

Turkey earthquake: Bay Area Turkish resident claims buildings collapsed due to 'shoddy' constructionTurkish radio program producer Ahmet Toprak, based out of San Jose, says he believes the widespread damage is from buildings not being built up to code. Toprak says that despite repeated warnings from experts that a large earthquake was in Turkey's future, calls for action were ignored. Lack of building codes and the enforcement of those non-existent codes. There is an International Building Code that can be applied to all developed and developing countries. Or perhaps it was the 25 aftershocks? What a stupid thing to say. Duh. And water is wet.
