The $14 billion in additional support for Israel proposed by the White House is far outstripped by existing and planned backing for Ukraine, but it comes on top of established funding. This includes $3.3 billion a year for arms and $500 million for missile defense, as well as an average of $1 billion in direct weapons sales and $24 billion in outstanding orders for F-35 fighters, refueling aircraft and helicopters.
Weapons account for most of the funding request, which also includes funds for embassy security. The plan comes in the wake of Israel last year cutting its defense budget, the second largest in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia. Israel, with a large domestic defense industry, is the 10th-largest weapons exporter, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, while it doesn’t rank in the top 10 for imports.
