Secretary of State Antony Blinken pushed back on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comment that Israel would take responsibility for Gaza’s security indefinitely.

Here are the biggest news items from the Israel-Gaza war on Nov. 8. Israel and its allies need to start “setting the conditions for durable peace” in Gaza now, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Tokyo on Wednesday. Peace in Gaza will require “Palestinian-led governance and Gaza unified with the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority,” Blinken added.

Israel said it opened an evacuation corridor “for civilians in northern Gaza to move southward” Wednesday, the fourth consecutive day that Israel said the route was open to facilitate its ordered evacuation of Palestinians from the enclave’s north. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said Israeli forces have been bombing an area to the west of al-Quds Hospital since Tuesday night. It said thousands of Palestinians have been sheltering there for weeks.
