Is Texas discouraging critical thinking in classrooms? | Opinion

Schools should encourage critical thinking in their students. Texas needs more independent thinkers, our columnist argues. It may seem that the furor over teaching controversial material has died down but, as the. We will put a stop to this nonsense in the upcoming legislative session. Schools must get back to fundamentals and stop pushing ‘woke’ agendas.”

Those who do not ask such questions before participating in civic discourse, before offering a lesson in a public school or before writing new laws about education, are blind to the larger contexts that shape history, that shape opinions; moreover, they want to pass such blindness on to the next generation, and the next, and so on.

But shall I also teach “Undemocratic Democracy” by Jamelle Bouie — a provocative essay that challenges the idea that all people living in the U.S. have always been equally protected by foundational ideals regulating, among other things, who has been allowed to speak freely and who has not? But wait: It now turns out that Bouie’s essay cannot be taught alongside Milton’s; Bouie’s work is part of the “1619 Project”; an essay on whether speech has been free to all in America is now banned in Texas. Has the state not banned teachers’ ability to establish contexts, to make issues relevant?

You know we are. Dumbing down of the children makes it easier to control in the future.

Yes- of course the current regime is!

About a dozen logic fallacies in this opinion piece. Thus, two things can be learned: DMN emp staff already has very few capable of engaging in critical thinking. One too many of the DMN uppers probably *learned* to use logic fallacies from this opinionator.

Nursing IS critical thinking, especially EMERGENCY Department. What’s going to happen if critical thinking not taught in schools

As a product of Texas public schools, I can tell you this; on the whole they’ve NEVER encouraged critical thinking. They didn’t openly discourage it back in the day, but they didn’t look kindly upon it from way back either. Standardized testing encourages standardized thought.

Yes.

That was literally codified in the Texas Republican Party platform around 8 years ago. They codified discouraging critical thinking and higher order thinking skills being taught in classrooms because it would encourage children to question the authority of parents in the home.

Old news

Yes. Yes they are.

The lack of critical thinking is how we have ended up in this mess we are in

Yes, Republicans are trying to dismantle education.

I wouldn’t know. You want to charge me to read the story!

You really asking this question? R’s don’t want anyone thinking critically

Hell, the governor of the state discourages critical thinking. That shit rolls downhill.

Given there are as many logic fallacies in this opinionation as there are beers on the wall, it's kinda clear why some 'teachers' probably shouldn't do this critical thinking stuff in a room full of people.

Taught in Dallas as recent as two years ago. Teachers want to include critical thinking. But don’t have time due to 20 layers of administrative BS and red tape.

It has since the 80s at least

SMH. terrible.

If you can't question what you're being taught then critical thinking is no longer on the curriculum and you're being taught how to obey.
