When you stroll through Seneca Falls, you may truly think you are seeing Bedford Falls. One undeniable example is the bridge where George Bailey prays and grapples with suicidal thoughts. A bridge in Seneca Falls looks nearly identical to the one in movie. Also, the town’s main street looks like the one George runs down while shouting in exuberant joy.Other similarities abound throughout the town.
The museum also points out that the film’s characters make several references to other towns within close proximity to the western New York locale of Seneca Falls. For example, there are references to Rochester and Buffalo. Furthermore, in Frank Capra’s original screenplay, George’s younger brother attends Cornell University in Ithaca, a city that is less than an hour’s drive from Seneca Falls.
A young girl jumped from the bridge to attempt suicide, yet she changed her mind and shouted for help. A man named Antonio Varacalli heard her cries for help and jumped in, ultimately sacrificing his life to save hers. A plaque on the bridge is dedicated to Antonio Varacalli and his heroic act.
