Is Russia helping North Korea weapon development? Patrick Shanahan won't confirm or deny

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan has refused to deny Russian involvement in North Korea’s weapons development programs, following recent weapons tests.

“I’ll leave that for you to decide,” Shanahan responded, failing to confirm or deny any Russian involvement in North Korea’s weapons programs, which have been a major obstacle to ongoing diplomatic efforts on the peninsula. “There are Russian technology fingerprints all over it,” Marcus Schiller, a leading expert on North Korean missiles, told The Associated Press. He explained that the test did not necessarily mean that North Korea was buying entire weapons systems directly from Russia, as Pyongyang could have ordered some parts from Russia and made certain components domestically.

“In fact, there is precedent for this. Back in the early 1990s when the Soviet Union collapsed, ex-Soviet scientists went to North Korea in droves to help the regime beef up their missile capabilities for cash. This might explain why so many of North Korea’s missiles look and operate just like the last patch of technological innovations from the USSR.”
