Is Pelosi Falling Between Two Stools in Her Impeachment Strategy?

It’s tough to second-guess Nancy Pelosi, but it could happen.

That should concern Democrats. The decision by Nancy Pelosi to quickly enact narrow articles of impeachment before the 2020 election year formally begins may well indicate that she views it as a distraction at best and as a potential problem for Democrats at worst. These attitudes should be unsurprising given her steady resistance to going down that road until the Ukraine scandal broke and the Democratic rank and file shifted massively into the pro-impeachment camp.

At the same time, though, impeachment has gone far enough to unite Republicans behind Trump and give them the relentless talking point they have already agreed upon and will repeat like a meditative chant at any moment Republican partisans need a fresh burst of energy: Impeachment is a coup designed to rob American voters of their right to elect — or reelect — the president of their choice.

Sadly, I fear it’s true. I was sure that framing impeachment in historic terms, taking a somber tone was correct. I now realize the Trumpers not only don’t give a shit about national morals or history, they want to destroy them - and Trump is their weapon.

Nobody has any hope in the GOP. Impeachment in the House should be sufficient to save our democracy. GOP's Senate will be on display, but nobody has any confidence in Moscow Mitch's 'Graveyard'.
