Audi is firmly on Team Lidar for self-driving cars

Share to linkedinThere is a long running debate in the realm of autonomous vehicles about whether self-driving cars need to be equipped with lidar sensors, or whether full autonomy can be achieved using a pure. It appears that Audi is firmly on Team Lidar.

Aeva announced today a strategic partnership with Autonomous Intelligent Driving, a research unit wholly owned by Audi responsible for developing autonomous technology for the manufacturer, and plans to equip the test fleet of electric What sets Aeva apart from other automotive-grade lidar manufacturers is their technology that can detect the velocity of an object in a single frame and up to 300 meters.

With purchase orders already in place, it seems many auto manufacturers have made up their minds that lidar will be part of their autonomous technology stack--at least for the first generation. However, it isn't really an either-or situation. Even if a company decides to go with an end-to-end machine learning self-driving platform, there isn't any reason that lidar couldn't be one of the sensors the system uses.

"We believe that for a safe stack you must have all the outputs to make the right decision," says Salehian"If you're using just a camera sensor, there are so many issues that may blind the system. You need to be able to compliment the different sensor technology weakness--get both outputs and its up to the carmaker to decide what to do with that information. What we provide is the ability to see what they couldn't see before and measure things directly.
