Over two days in January 1972, the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin — she was 29 at the time — sweeps into the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts in front of a congregation and testifies to God in song. The blessed thing took nearly half a century to come out because director Sydney Pollack failed to sync the image with the sound.

“Working with Irrfan is working with someone who doesn’t really have any masks when he comes to work,” Singh said. “We communicate without gossiping about anything at all. We can only talk about our work…sometimes a glance is enough to lead us in a certain direction.” “What Anup does is, his way of storytelling is very peculiar,” Khan said. “It leaves spaces for you to form your own story. That’s a new experience for me…It gives me a lot of scope to experiment.”Popular on Variety
