In Marvel Comics, Iron Man is debuting his strongest Hulkbuster yet to take the Hulk down once and for all. But even with its considerable bells and whistles, this titanic armor points to some character flaws deep within the Golden Avenger that continue to prove why Iron Man will never beat Hulk.
The epic Banner of War event continues in Donny Cates and Martin Cóccolo’s Hulk #7. With Hulk the presumed culprit of a gruesome murder spree in El Paso, the recently crowned Asgardian King Thor has made it his mission to apprehend him by any means necessary, leading to their star-smashing heavy-weight duel. At one point, Thor hurls Mjolnir at Hulk to allow his father’s spirit to engage Banner telepathically.
Since then, Iron Man has continued to enhance the Hulkbuster and develop other weapons to fulfill a similar modus. None of them have worked, at least not long term. The concerning aspect of this behavior is that Tony’s concerns seem to have morphed from the preservation of peace into a preoccupation with power. Putting aside his battles with opiate addiction, Stark is an inveterate control freak with an ego and an obsessive compulsion to “fix.
The tragedy here is how Tony’s mindset seemingly devalues, if not altogether disregards, his friendship with Bruce Banner. Apparently years of working together affords Banner no benefit of the doubt, despite the fact that the Avengers have proven willing to turn a blind eye toward the Hulk’s rampages as long as they’re aimed at a powerful enemy.
