An Irish inquiry into alarming death rates among newborns at church-run homes for unwed mothers will hand down its final report on Tuesday Listen to the Reuters podcast on Ireland's buried babies

DUBLIN - An Irish inquiry into alarming death rates among newborns at church-run homes for unwed mothers will hand down its final report on Tuesday, laying bare one of the Catholic Church’s darkest chapters and leading to demands for state compensation. The Church’s reputation in Ireland has been shattered by a series of scandals over paedophile priests, abuse at workhouses, forced adoptions of illegitimate babies and other painful issues.

Then-Prime Minister Enda Kenny described the burial site at Tuam, in the western county of Galway, as a “chamber of horrors”. Government records show that the mortality rate for children at the homes where tens of thousands of women, including rape victims, were sent to give birth, was often more than five times that of those born to married parents.

Well, yes by “today’s society” is why the government is trying to do as much as possible to “make things right” so to speak. Not something they’re succeeding at because of the situation their predecessors left them with. It’s a huge mess.

I love babies

The frustration is how long these situations go on for (30 years) with everyone turning a blind eye. Then again the Church did seem to be left managing people when the Government should have taken a properly organised approach to mother and child care

Oh so it’s the Magdalene laundries story all over again. The Catholic Church and it’s view on abortion, un married mothers, condoms etc is so out of touch with the reality of today’s society. They are the shameful ones.

What's new?

I don't think I want to know

Is it a wilful attempt to get rid of unwanted pregnancy by such mothers or the staff is naive and ill eqipped?

Verschrikkelijk
