In this Nov. 7, 2019, photo Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds speaks during an interview with The Associated Press in her formal office at the Statehouse in Des Moines, Iowa. For Reynolds, her drunken driving conviction nearly 20 years ago marked a turning point. Now, after becoming the state's first female governor, the Republican is using her experience as motivation for a stubborn campaign to restore the vote to felons that has divided her from many in her own party.
Reynolds acknowledges that her painful experience gave her a different perspective from many of her colleagues. However, to Reynolds the issue is personal. She unsuccessfully pushed her proposal last year to restore felons voting rights, and is trying again. It’s unclear how many people in Iowa have felony records and could vote if the governor’s plan is implemented, but it’s likely in the tens of thousands.
She grew up in a conservative rural community south of Des Moines, dropped out of college, got married at age 23 and raised her children with her husband while working as a grocery checker and in the county treasurer’s office. She later became treasurer herself and held the office for 14 years.
This is a shitty headline . She has the power to do it herself and is choosing not too. Be better
Wait so she was about 40 years old when she got this conviction? Well her decision making skills as a fully matured adult leaves much to be desired. She showing the same judgment now risking lives by refusing stay at home orders statewide.
Weird how all the China-loving liberals are suddenly AGAINST criminal justice reform, and more for locking them all up and throwing away the key. Well, except for Hillary. They are still obsessed with trying to elect her president.
But she also calls on her multiple OWI's as an excuse to not allow cannabis to be legalized (even though our next door neighbors in IL have it) due to her issues with addiction. Yet legalized sports betting - as though gambling addictions are not a thing. We see you Kim.
Sounds like a noble cause.
Ugh.
How about issuing a stay-home order first! Priorities people! 🤷🏼♀️
Felons she not be allowed to vote
release them all pandemic
I think they deserve a vote
Is she crazy?
