The finalists were chosen by a panel of judges including Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg, Steven Kolb, Andrew Rosen, Mark Holgate, Chioma Nnadi, Eva Chen, Paloma Elsesser, Jeffrey Kalinsky, Roopal Patel, and Joseph Altuzarra. This summer, they will meet with each finalist to review their collections, visit their studios, and provide feedback on everything from design to retail and business strategy.
The winner and two runners-up will be announced at a gala in New York City on November 4th that will include a runway show featuring all 10 labels’ work. The winner will receive a prize of $400,000, plus mentorship from established designers and industry experts; runners-up will receive $150,000 each.
“Our ten finalists are a true reflection of American fashion—and the world—today, speaking to creativity, community, and sustainability,” said Anna Wintour, editor in chief ofand artistic director of Condé Nast. “They are following in the footsteps of so many wonderful talents who’ve come before them, and I look forward to seeing what our class of 2019 will do in the months to come.”
No CVFF class is the same, but a few things already stand out about this year’s group. For starters, Danielle Hirsch is the first bridal designer to be included in the competition; there are three menswear-specific brands ; and many of the labels emphasize handwork and craft, including Alejandra Alonso Rojas, Lou Dallas, and Barragán. It all paints a compelling picture of where New York fashion is headed in 2020.
