It’s been one year since I sat in my living room and watched CNN’s Jake Tapper try toof what was happening in the United States Capitol. I remember watching the sea of people storming into the limestone buildings as if I were seeing stills from a black and white movie, flashes of violence intercut with smoke. As with most breaking news, I wasn’t completely sure.
These Trump supporters were trying to stop the certification of the electoral vote in the hopes of continuing his presidency for another term despite Trump losing both the electoral college and the popular vote. We had always, at least in my lifetime, had peaceful transfers of power. Would that end now, and what did that mean for American democracy? I didn’t completely know what I was watching, but even then, I knew I was watching a line being crossed.
When we look back at the presidential election, it can seem somewhat surprising that we witnessed this fundamental challenge to democracy. On November 3 2020, Donald Trump lost his reelection. This was pretty clear around
