With a version of Instagram for kids, Facebook Inc. says it can build a safer social-media haven for users under 13.
Yet the company faces hurdles from lawmakers who want the tech giant to keep its distance from kids—and the fact that plenty of children under 13 are already using the regular Instagram app. The issue was brought into sharp relief this week, in the form of a letter sent by Democratic lawmakers to the company that raises fresh questions about Facebook’s recently announced plans for an Instagram-branded product designed for children under 13. Users under 13 are currently prohibited from joining any of the company’s platforms.
“Facebook and Instagram are in the crosshairs, and they should be,” said Jim Steyer, founder of Common Sense Media, an advocacy group promoting safe technology use for families. He cited research findings that heavy use of social media can undermine teenagers’ mental health in some circumstances.
Where are their parents? Who the hell would allow a kid 13 or younger to be on social media?

They already don’t do anything to protect kids. My daughter has been harassed several times by someone that just keeps making new accounts. What has FB or Instagram done? Absolutely nothing. Even when the local PD has issued warrants for information. Facebook instagram
I think facebook needs to but out! Their record on security is not the best! Zuckerberg has lied so many times over security, and selling personal accounts info to 3rd parties or being involved in politics. I can go on but my answer on personal accounts for13 and under no!

This sounds like a terrible idea, how are they going to ensure their users are only kids under 13? Kids under 13 general don't have ID outside of birth certs and ss cards, and what parent in their right mind wants to upload either of those docs to facebook?
