Beneath the towering yellow cedars and Douglas firs of a west coast Canadian rainforest, police and protesters are battling over the future of one of the last unprotected old-growth watersheds on southern Vancouver Island.as biodiversity and climate change are inextricably linked with ancient trees.
Big Lonely Doug, Canada’s second-largest Douglas Fir tree, is 230 feet tall and estimated to be over 1,000 years old. It was spared from logging in 2012 and now stands alone in the middle of a cut block approximately 13 miles away from the Fairy Creek watershed.Protesters, who prefer to be called forest defenders, first moved into the Fairy Creek area last August, to prevent logging company Teal-Jones Group from cutting the ancient trees.
