Why the James Comey miniseries both wowed and terrified buyers, wooed and then infuriated star Jeff Daniels, and now has its showrunner bracing for big blowback from Trump:"I'm almost certainly going to get audited, and that's the best-case scenario."Like every other Hollywood liberal, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter had been devastated by Donald Trump’s win and faulted the former FBI director for throwing the election his way.
But like most things in Hollywood, it wasn’t that simple.
"The thing I was concerned about is [whether this is] just going to be a diatribe, an apology, a love letter to James Comey," says CBS chief creative officer David Nevins, a political junkie who was running only Showtime back then. And while it was Ray who drove the pitch — a masterful 43 minutes, according to several who heard it — he’d cede the floor to Comey at the end of every presentation to field questions like Nevins'.
Desperate to keep the project alive, Salerno advised Ray to just keep hiring actors."There’s going to be a [budget] number that they can’t come back from," he’d say,"because that’s how it works." Of course, moving quickly wasn’t always as easy as it sounded. In fact, Ray came dangerously close to decamping to Toronto, where they filmed the series last winter, without an actor to play Trump.
"But we knew it was Viacom," says Daniels,"that they were supportive of Trump in the past." So the series’ star said he looked forward to seeing the completed show but he wouldn’t be promoting it. He’d been around long enough to know it was the only card he had, and he was pissed off enough to play it.
Comey’s about to be indicted by Durham for his part in the Russia hoax. His book was a lie and the series based on it is a joke.

The reason Comey feels nausea when he relives what happened in 2016, it's because he knows, deep down, that he played a key role in unleashing Donald Trump, not just on the United States, but on the entire planet. I would be puking my guts out, too.
Pure and simple, James Comey fucked up. He violated his own agency's rules regarding public statements about ongoing investigations and, in the process, tipped the results of a presidential election. He may be a nice man with good intentions, but he screwed the United States.

davidfrum “he liked to think there were additional factors in the election results” is a ridiculous platitude. Obviously, there are many factors in any event. When election results are so close, though, *any* factor is likely to be deterministic. The Comey factor likely gave DJT the WH.
Not a fan of Comey, but I'm excited for it nonetheless.
