Tommy Veevee, who had been designated a dangerous offender, was serving an indeterminate sentence for two sexual assaults

The circumstances of his death are under review; as per the CSC’s policy, police and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service have been notified.In 1999, he was designated a dangerous offender in the Nunavut Court of Justice in a decisionVeevee had been convicted for two sexual assaults committed in 1997 against two separate people in Iqaluit, was sentenced in 1999. He had several previous convictions for sex offences against women and girls.

Browne wrote that all of the incidents taken together “have been considered in establishing a pattern of repetitive and aggressive behaviour and the inability to control sexual impulses.” Veevee, born in 1965 in a remote community on Baffin Island, started using substances including drugs, solvents and alcohol in his early teens, and became involved in the criminal justice system in the early 1980s. The court noted that at about this time, Veevee first started experiencing hallucinations and other “psychotic symptoms.
