NEW DELHI—India’s most populous state approved legislation requiring interfaith couples to give two-months notice before getting married, in the latest example of a policy backed by the Hindu right becoming law.
Supporters of the law, passed in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which is run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, say it is necessary to target forced religious conversions. But critics say it opens the door to harassment of interfaith couples and Muslims.
