The controversial votes culminate a years-long effort to make San Diego’s 40 neighborhood planning groups better organized, more diverse and more reflective of their communities

San Diego City Council members made an unprecedented move Tuesday that could ultimately pave the way for more high-rises and dense development in Hillcrest, Mission Hills, Bankers Hill and nearby neighborhoods. Council members voted 8-1 to replace the neighborhood group that represent those areas with an upstart neighborhood group that describes itself as younger, more renter-focused and less resistant to development.

'Uptown Planners is not, as has been claimed against us, just a bunch of rich, white old folks,' said McKenzie, saying the group has multiple members who are under 25, multiracial and lower-income. Victoria LaBruzzo, chair of the Scripps Ranch Community Planning Group, also criticized the council's decision. 'This move is undemocratic,' she said, contending the motivation was less about structure and more about paving the way for dense housing.
