For the first time, a team of astronomers has discovered methane emissions coming from a distant brown dwarf.
The brown dwarf, W1935, is located 47 light years from Earth. It was co-discovered by Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science volunteer Dan Caselden and the NASA CatWISE team.with a surface temperature of approximately 400° Fahrenheit. The researchers couldn’t determine its mass with a great deal of accuracy, though it is likely 6-35 times the mass of Jupiter.
“We were pleasantly shocked when the model clearly predicted a temperature inversion,” explained co-author Ben Burningham from the University of Hertfordshire. “But we also had to figure out where that extra upper atmosphere heat was coming from.”
