When Julian Klein was growing up in Ocean Township, N.J., as a member of a family that attended synagogue on a regular basis, questions about his identity were constant.
Given his upbringing, the notion that one could purge"sinful thoughts" through intense religious exercise was never far from Klein's mind. But nearly a decade later, the practice persists thanks to loopholes that allow religious groups to continue conversion therapy and a belief among some therapists that the issue has become politicized. “We want parents to love their kids, we want political leaders and religious leaders to embrace that, but it is all being jeopardized by anti-trans bills.” As always, geography is a defining factor in the fight: A federal judge in Washington state recently rejected an attempt by a family counselor to block the state's law prohibiting conversion therapy on minors.
“There is great hypocrisy,” Doyle says of activists that support a conversion therapy ban. He believes “the issue is about a political agenda for them based on their political motivation.”
A common tactic used by these groups is to publicly denounce it, but encourage and practice it themselves. Another tactic is change definitions to make it easier to lie about it, and lead more people to it. Regardless of the label or methods used, it is horrific and abusive!
We need to turn sex into science. Instead of moralising, create a foundation of understanding of the biology and philosophy of sex. Too many forces confuse the situation for their own narrow agenda.
America! Land of the free. Given the right to pursue happiness. Guaranteed life, liberty, & justice. Religious or not religious freedom. These are common sense ideas shared by normal people. Only money and power over people does this not make sense.
Well, thank heavens. There are people who don’t want to have gay feelings or trans feelings and you would leave them no alternative but to suffer. There is not just one type of conversion therapy, there are all kinds of avenues one might choose to conquer unwanted LGBTQ feelings.
Adding yet another weighty concern to the overloaded public health scale. Just say when, America. Universal healthcare is yours if you want it. It's not socialism. It's not single payer. It's your right.
