Plans include replacing piles, rewiring lighting and electrical panels and repairing utility lines

The Port of San Diego has approved structural upgrades to the southernmost pier in California. Last week, commissioners issued a $1.5 million construction contract to Pomona-based Reyes Construction, Inc. for the 60-year-old Imperial Beach pier, which the agency owns and the city maintains. The project aims to “enhance the safety, functionality, and longevity of the pier’s infrastructure,” the agency said in a news release.

Imperial Beach’s pier has been the city’s main attraction for decades. It has restrooms, benches and the Tin Fish, the only restaurant on the pier. Nearby is the iconic, colorful Portwood Pier Plaza entrance, parks, bike paths, eateries and shops. But the Port sees the pier’s potential to attract more foot traffic. The port has recently made $3.
