From a plow driver shortage to a tied-up ferry, the impacts of state job vacancies are rippling through Alaska:

To help deal with the storms, the state called in off-duty workers and transferred some from other assignments, like clearing the Dalton Highway, which leads to Prudhoe Bay.

“It’s important to share that AMHS staffing shortages have never been as significant as they are right now,” deputy DOT commissioner Rob Carpenter wrote this week inShannon Adamson, local boss of the union representing ferry deck officers, said there is a nationwide shortage of maritime workers and the state, in some ways, is lucky that it doesn’t have many ferries operating.

“We are experiencing the exact same thing throughout the state of Alaska,” Department of Revenue commissioner Lucinda Mahoney said.

A ferry job in Homer advertised $21/hr. With the required 24/hr availability, that's about $1.1M/yr.

State doesn’t want to pay for workers.

Nooo... the tied up ferry is because the budget for an essential State service was cut to the point of allowing no redundancy in the system. It's disingenuous to blame a labor shortage on a vessel that was not on the schedule.

Finally some good news. Right sizing state govt is finally happening despite lack of effort by the bought and paid for legislature and governor.

Coincidentally, these shortages began once the gov't decided to create incentives for being jobless.

you can thank the Governor and Senators for not following the health dept. and CDC
