Hurricane Ida and its subsequent destruction came as the state struggled to contain its fourth COVID-19 wave, putting hospitals on the brink.

There were at least 2,684 people in Louisiana hospitals due to COVID-19 before the storm hit, the mayor’s office reports. The storm has only intensified the pressure on the state’s health care system to tackle the virus.

“Those of us that have been working the pandemic from the beginning are really tired and frustrated,” New Orleans Health Department Director Jennifer Avegno said in an interview. “In this region, our health care workers know exactly what they’re getting into. ... It’s 12-hour shifts in hospitals, it’s sleeping on cots, hunkering down, not being able to contact your friends and family hoping that they’re OK for the storm.

At a press conference on Monday, New Orleans Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Collin Arnold warned residents to stay away from the post-hurricane aftermath.
