Discussions have also begun on a possible replacement for the rocket at the rest stop.
The Saturn 1B rocket, shown here in January 2023, at the I-65 Alabama welcome center just south of the Tennessee state line has an uncertain future amid continuing deterioration. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville said earlier in the day that it supported removing the rocket, saying that deterioration was too extensive to repair and that it could become a safety hazard. The rest stop is now closed while undergoing renovation by the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Its presence is to remind travelers of Huntsville’s space travel legacy that’s been renewed with the December launch of Artemis I that orbited the moon.
How about the Shuttle on top of the 747? 😳
Agreed another rocket or space shuttle. Why change an iconic entrance into ALABAMA.
Let's see a full-scale full stack SLS model put in its place! That would be impressive.
An even bigger rocket.
Another rocket. Why do they have to change it.
This is sad.
I am willing to lay on the ground naked in its place with a picture of Gal Gadot to recreate the monument.
The same exact rocket. That's how I always knew I was home when traveling. It's gotta be the same
A newer model
Replace it with another rocket of similar size and payload
A gigantic oak tree.

Giant dildo
Fundraiser like they did to repair Vulcan
Very sad. So many memories going south. It was our first stop every time from Kentucky. The kids loved it (I did too). Please replace it. It's an icon on 65 south.
