A team of scientists shed new light on Arrokoth – which is a space rock in Kupier Belt, and it apparently has stores of ancient ice.A distant “space snowman” could teach us a thing or two about the ancient solar system.
The Kuiper Belt lies at the outermost region of the solar system. It is made up of ancient space rocks from the early formation of the solar system – roughly 4.6 billion years ago., scientists weren’t sure whether these space rocks would contain ice dating back to the ancient solar system. Now, the team behind the new study believes the conditions are right for Kuiper Belt objects to have stored ice that never melted over billions of years.
Now, the new model provides a reason for this longevity. It suggests that highly volatile ices in these space rocks can remain in essentially the same state for billions of years. “The key thing is that we corrected a deep error in the physical model people had been assuming for decades for these very cold and old objects,” Umurhan explained. “This study could be the initial mover for reevaluating the comet interior evolution and activity theory.”
