Mobile home communities, interchangeably referred to as manufactured home communities, often face eviction because corporate businesses and the local government see a better use for the occupied land.
“I lived here in a trailer,” Bos said in Spanish. “They placed a piece of paper on the door of the trailer and said we had to get out. We had to get out of there because the city had already bought [the area].” A relocation expert from Pinnacle Consulting Management Group Inc. was hired to work with each leaseholder individually, said Barry Shelton, McKinney’s assistant manager. Documents were given to all the residents on Feb. 6 to make them aware of their time frame, options and opportunities to have the mobile park cleared out by May 9.
Once the inhabitants cleared out, the city was able to remove 15 mobile units by June 11. The trailers were in horrible third-world-living conditions for the inhabitants and many units tested positive for asbestos or lead-based paint, Shelton said.
“I live here on the street, but I would like to change my life,” Bos said in Spanish. “I don’t need you to come and take out your wallet and say, ‘Here you go, $50, $100,’ no. What I need is this [points firmly at his heart], to convert to the Almighty. Convert to God and seek my path. I’ve been away from God for a long time, but believe me, I have a lot of heart to serve God, but unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible.
