Corbin Carroll’s meteoric rise for the Diamondbacks raises the question: How could half the teams in baseball have passed on him in the draft?

One day in the spring of 2019, Diamondbacks scouts Dan Ramsay and Doyle Wilson were watching then-Seattle prep prospect Corbin Carroll take batting practice. Swing after swing generated a line drive, Carroll shooting balls to all parts of the field.

There were other reasons, as well, that he could have slipped, ranging from his home region in the Pacific Northwest to the competition he faced in high school to the strength of his draft class. But those are viewed as secondary for a player who was listed in his draft year as 5-foot-10, 165 pounds.

“When he went out and did what he did on the circuit,” said Ramsay, the Diamondbacks’ Pacific Northwest area scout, “that was kind of what sparked the high interest in him from the industry.” “He had the tools, but it wasn’t like he had light tower power,” the AL scout said. “I never would have expected him to have close to 20 home runs at the break. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. He hit the ball hard and he hit it hard consistently, which was one of the things people liked about him. You knew there would be some home run power, but dreaming on him being a 35-plus home run guy would have been a huge reach.

“You’re having crosscheckers come in and they might get to see him for two games and he might only get off one or two swings and he’s facing guys that are throwing 75 ,” the AL scout said. “That’s kind of how it went that spring. There were a lot of games you wouldn’t even get to see him swing the bat. As that happens over and over again, you’re going to put your name on a guy to take him in the Top 10 picks and you didn’t see him swing the bat in the spring? That’s tough.

“We’re not afraid to take shorter players,” Sawdaye said. “ come in different sizes. There is a difference between being short and being small. Short and strong is good. It’s great to be a hitter if you’re short and strong. Short and small is not good. It means you’re probably weak.”
