After some recent successes, including opening for Amy Poehler at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest, I'd been encouraged by my newly secured managers to make the move from Oakland to Los Angeles. It didn’t help that nothing in the house worked. When my raw vegetables did not turn into roasted vegetables, I informed my roommate that the oven was broken. “Oh yeah, the oven doesn’t work,” she said. When I informed her the bathroom tub didn’t drain, she responded, “Oh yeah, the tub doesn’t drain.” When I wasn’t receiving any of my mail, she said, “Oh honey, we don’t really get mail here.
On the day of my appointment, I remembered my potential roommate’s warm voice and deep laugh and found myself nervous. I styled my hair 10 different ways and tried on 10 different outfits before settling on a heather gray T-shirt tucked into a full floral skirt—a look that said, “I didn’t try at all, but look how cute I am!” With a hair fluff, I was on my way to Eagle Rock.
