I spent 5 hours trying to find this elusive Disneyland treat

I see this happen every Christmas season, and I never understand the hype. How could a candy cane incite this much fervor in not just a few people, but a whole faction of Disneyland fandom? The candy canes are hand-pulled in Disneyland’s candy shop and are made they day they’re sold. The scarcity comes from the fact that they’re so time-consuming to make, and the devotees who get them annually say there’s something special about a fresh candy cane as opposed to one from a package.

This year, I decided, I was going to find out for myself. I might not have understood all the fuss, but I wanted to. So, I went on a quest for one of Disneyland’s rarest and most prized foods.How rainy was it at Disneyland that day? The rain was going down and back up.In fairness, I made several pretty big mistakes in the process. And I chose not just the worst day of the holiday season, but probably the worst day of 2022 to go to the park.penalizes people for canceling day-of.

I also couldn’t wait until the rain stopped. In order to get a candy cane, I learned from months of watching people strategize online, you had to “rope drop.” That’s the Disney term for arriving early enough that you’re there when the park opens for the morning and park employees lower the rope blocking Main Street from the rest of the park.

By 6 a.m., I was in my car. The rain was so intense that even on a Sunday morning before sunrise, the freeway was crammed with cars crawling at 30 and 40 mph. The drive should have taken me about 35 minutes, but it took an hour. I was in the garage by 7:05 a.m., and on the tram by 7:25 a.m. “Welcome to Disney’s water park!” the security guard at bag check said cheerfully.

I was wearing jeans, a heavy wool sweater and a waterproof puffer jacket, with my hood up and an umbrella overhead. But by the time I scanned into Disneyland at 7:35 a.m. for the park’s 8 a.m. opening, I was drenched and shivering.
