Tyler, the Creator and Lil Nas X shine beautifully amid a sea of deeply weird moments on Music’s Biggest Huh?

great on Prince’s classics, and it definitely made more sense than, say, Jennifer Lopez wading through the entire Motown catalog last year. But it was, at best, perverse — and not in a coolPrince, who told me in 2014 that it was time to embrace the “feminine energy” in music and society, would have likely been more impressed by the musicality and fearlessness of his one-time protégée Lizzo’s show opener, and the casual multi-instrumental mastery displayed by H.E.R.

Spelling Ric Ocasek’s name wrong in the In Memoriam section was insulting, as were the omissions of David Berman, Bushwick Bill, Scott Walker, and others. And while Trombone Shorty and the Preservation Hall Band was a lovely touch, it only underscored the fact that the random, corporately driven “moments” could have been replaced by honoring some of the musicians who actually died in the past year, beyond the welcome Nipsey Hussle salute.

The Grammys Did Not Ask FKA twigs to Sing (But Should Have)Of the countless live performances that made it to air during Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, few were as memorable as the Usher and FKA twigs tribute to Prince. He sounded great, but she didn’t sound at all. Despite having just released the best work of her career, 2019's MAGDALENE, and earned a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Music Video for her fantastic “Cellophane,” twigs wasn’t asked to sing. Instead, she swung around a stripper pole with her mythical core strength and managed to bring necessary “Nasty Girl” je ne sais quoi to the stage as Usher’s knees trembled under the weight of the icon they were celebrating. While Usher sang “When Doves Cry,” twigs appeared only as a silhouette in the shadows, denied a chance to get on the mic.\n
