A promotional image for Emo Brunch, an event by the company Bucket Listers popping up at venues across the country this summer.I knew I was headed the right way to Emo Brunch when I spotted two people dressed head-to-toe in black, a Fall Out Boy song playing faintly in the distance. It was a beautiful, sunny Monday in San Francisco, and instead of attending a Memorial Day barbecue, my former emo kid peers and I chose to be at the Midway, indulging in a little early-Aughts nostalgia.
If that’s not compelling enough already, the breakfast items at Emo Brunch have punny emo band-themed names: take, for example, the “Fall Out Fried Chicken & Waffles” or “Chilaquiles! at the Disco.” Filing into the Midway on Monday morning, a person bravely rocking an all-black leather outfit in 70-degree weather handed me and my friend Joshua themed menus. While the emo playlist was already in full force, they informed us that there was also emo karaoke available “if we were brave.”
We placed our brunch orders: the “Black Parade Avocado Toast” and a “Taste of Ink Mimosa” for me and the “Fall Out Fried Chicken & Waffles” and a “Myspace Top 8” for Joshua. As the only drink included in the $50 ticket price, I was a little disappointed when a very tiny, very ordinary mimosa in a plastic cup appeared a few minutes later. Couldn’t it at least have been dyed black or something?
