The U.S. surgeon general has called it an 'urgent public health crisis' — a devastating decline in the mental health of kids across the country.

By Sharyn AlfonsiThe U.S. surgeon general has called it an 'urgent public health crisis' – a devastating decline in the mental health of kids across the country. According to the CDC, the rates of suicide, self harm, anxiety and depression are up among adolescents – a trend that began before the pandemic.

To manage the mental health crisis and heavy caseload, Dr. Pickett introduced an iPad with a series of questions that screen the mental health of every child ten and older who comes to the ER for any reason. Neenah Hughes: I've always been a super smart kid, and I've always had really good grades. And then as soon as the pandemic hit, I failed a class. When I was virtual I had no motivation to do anything. I would just sit in my room, never leave, and it was, like, obvious signs of depression.

CDC numbers show that even before the pandemic, the number of adolescents saying they felt persistently sad or hopeless was up 40% since 2009. Eleven-year-old Austin Bruenger desperately needed that support during the pandemic. He's a fifth grader at Roosevelt Elementary School in Milwaukee.Austin Bruenger: I was nine. I was still going to school, but then I kept hearing on the news in the car, just like, pandemic, stay put, quarantine, 14 days.

Melissa Bruenger: And that's when I think everything just started to magnify. He, you know, he was always asking to see his friends. We couldn't. And I remember there was one moment that he was just on the floor, like, kicking and punching the air. Just-- but couldn't describe why he was upset. Melissa Bruenger: All this stuff is racing through my head. And then for them to say,"Well, there's no beds right now." And I'm like,"How am I going to keep him safe?"

Blame the politicians who cared more about control than letting people live their lives as they wanted

Failed leadership leaves little hope for the next generation while healthcare is perversely inaccessible in America. …But why are kids depressed!?

After watching the way RWers have conducted themselves the last few years, & even longer, if they research it? How this so-called society handled the pandemic? Of course they are in pain-w/ good reason. It's not them who is ill-it's us.

How many of these kid read books?

The amount of suicides in kids are outrageous, but it like no one’s cares. There needs to be a lot more done in schools to help these kids. They need a lot more access to mental health counselors.

Wonder why? States banning books to read, telling kids that can’t be who they are, rising costs of college, inheriting a climate crisis and now a threat to basic female rights. Oh and having to wear full body armor to school because guns are apparently an essential part of life.

Wonder what the republican push to homeschool all children will do to their mental health?

WWIII , RIP UNFAIR RIGGED WORLD

Joe bidens lock down caused it.

Nice!

Antisocial social media may cause antisocial mental health issues.

Am seeing it up close & personal on a daily basis. The US seems to have indifference to children & the elderly.

Thinking Occupational Therapy could be one of the best professions to assist with this crisis. The profession started over a century ago, assisting the mental health population.

No wonder; look at what you Socialists have put in their heads. You reap what you sow.

It wasn't accelerated by a pandemic but by hysteria over a virus that isn't significantly lethal. You Covidiots turned society upside down, forcing businesses to close, putting people out of work. You instructed social animals to socially distance never considering the cost.

Locking kids, people down over a flu ....democrats you built this and it will come back on you !

I think we talked about this a in 2020 and got ignored.

Oh , please seek help, there is another day for you to see

Enough! Stop the REP-ulsive Extremist-Anti-Role Models & Parents Who've Fallen Prey to Fascist Ploys from Consistently Spewing Lies, Grooming Kids to be Haters, & Inundating Them with Deplorably Disgusting Displays & ‘Rhetoric’ …24/7!!!

C’mon! All they’re dealing with is 24 hour algorithm fed social media bullying and jealousy, once-in-a-lifetime storms several times a year, exremist anger from adults, laws outlawing control of their own bodies, and ya know…a lot of schoolwork.

Turns out forced isolation coupled with separating people into oppressor and oppressed is not very healthy. DUH.

Gee, lockdowns for 2 years will do that to people.

Im worried about everyone’s mental health since a large percentage of us believes in Qanon

Couldn’t be that they were forced inside without any social interaction through sports or hanging out with friends.

The real cost of lockdowns and masks

Maybe we should make them wear masks all day, and lockdown schools again. Nice job teachers union

Simple. Don't let kids use social media! Next!!!!!! 🙄

Social media is eating their souls

If kids doing this bad, adults are just as bad!!! They don't care about US!

Old news.

It’s the parents fault your kid is a mental case. My kids all went to Harvard.
