‘I Am Heartbroken’: Jane Fonda Shares Touching Tribute to Donald Sutherland

“I am stunned to hear that Donald Sutherland has died. He was my fascinating co-star in Klute and we loved working together,” Fonda said in an Instagram post accompanied with a photo of the two of them on the film’s set. “Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared quite a few adventures with me, such as the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam war tour that performed for 60,000 active duty soldiers, sailors, and marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Japan in 1971.

Sutherland played the titular detective John Klute in the film, while Fonda played the call girl Bree Daniels, who Klute is trying to protect from a killer stalking her. Fonda would go on to win her first Academy Award for her portrayal in the film.“I found his rangy, hangdog quality and droopy, pale blue eyes especially appealing. His son Kiefer Sutherland announced his death online, calling his father “one of the most important actors in the history of film.” With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.
