Black women are twice as likely to have hypertension as white women. What role does racism play?

Share to twitterSexism and racism create a one-two punch that can knock out even the most resilient of black women.It isn’t always visible from the outside, but there’s no shortage of stressors in the lives of black women.

But the deeper we dig, the clearer it becomes that black women’s bodies are internalizing a large share of the forces, often with life-threatening consequences., which was presented at the American Heart Association's Hypertension 2019 Scientific Sessions, found that hypertension affected 49% of young black women, versus 28% of their white counterparts.

The toxic effects of stress that accompany racism are well documented. Everything from our reproductive health to our mental health are harmed.chest pain, heart failure, stroke, heart attack and a number of other issues.
