STAFF REPORT HUNTSVILLE — HudsonAlpha announced last week that it received $383,268 in funding from Gov. Kay Ivey that will go toward the institution's Timber project.
“This project has the potential to enhance the industry’s ability to accurately verify species at a large scale,” Josh Clevenger, the principal investigator for the project, said. “It has the possibility to identify timber assets with key genetic traits, market superior products to buyers, and mitigate financial risk over the long time span required to harvest and produce forestry products.”
Working with HudsonAlpha Wiregrass will be an extensive group of industry partners, including SmartLam North America, Great Southern Wood Preserving and Rex Lumber. The project would also include private landowners, forestry experts, and other advisors.Alabama’s forestry sector accounts for more than $27 billion a year and more than 120,000 jobs, according to the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama.
“We look forward to working with HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology on this grant to leverage their expertise in genetics and genomics to benefit one of Alabama’s most important industries," Issacson said.
