Howard Schultz shares the policies he would pursue as a “centrist Independent” candidate as he explores a potential presidential run:

we discussed with Howard Schultz, a man who will probably run for president as an independent, the critical events that shaped him, starting with a turbulent, often abusive childhood. Despite experiences that would have shattered others, he emerges as a strong, determined, extraordinarily far-sighted man unafraid to take risks and defy conventional wisdom, characteristics that enabled him to create the Starbucks we know today.

Particularly impressive in all of this tumult and defy-the-odds business-building is that Schultz never lost his basic humanity or his idealistic desire to make things better—Starbucks is the first company to provide health insurance to all part-time partners ; it also offers a stock buying program for all partners, not just management.

In this conversation, Schultz talks about his innovative college program that has enabled some 10,000 partners to attend college online and about his impressive, successful outreach to veterans. But we also see a man who can manage a major crisis, a crucial attribute for someone in the Oval Office: the gut-wrenching actions he had to take—painful layoffs, including numerous people he knew personally, and some 1,000 store closings—to save his company from the economic crisis of 2007-09 and a series of internal mistakes. He is not a man who shrinks from tough decisions.

Then we discuss critical issues he will be grappling with if he becomes president—taxes, healthcare, education, the Federal Reserve, foreign policy. Even if you disagree with some of his views—and to be fair, he hasn’t yet issued detailed policy statements—what emerges is a man who recognizes that in many areas like health, education and taxation, a systemic overhaul is necessary, and he makes the case that the two parties are incapable of achieving this.
