Popular Mechanics sat down with Dr. Ben Rein, a neuroscientist from Stanford School of Medicine and TikTok content creator, to discuss all things neuroscience and brains. In part 1 of the series, we debunk some common brain myths he encounters everyday.

There’s a group of people who seem to be winning against the march of time: Superagers are those 95 and older who are extra resilient against life-threatening health conditions and who maintain the cognitive and physical abilities of much younger people.“They enjoy extended health,” explains Nir Barzilai, M.D., founding director of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Institute for Aging Research and scientific director at AFAR.

Here’s what he does to extend his own life span:Step outDr. Barzilai hits 10K steps daily. His advice: “Go a little farther every day.” He also does once-weekly strength training to prevent age-related muscle degeneration and works on balance and flexibility.Eat lessDr. Barzilai is excited about promising research on intermittent fasting, which seems to extend the life spans of animals.
