It wasn't easy to cancel in-person screenings for sundancefest, says festival director Tabitha Jackson. “At that point, it seemed irresponsible to continue, given the pressure we’d be putting on our host city and county,” Jackson said.

Kanye West is profiled in the documentary "jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy," directed by Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah, an official selection of the Premieres section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. This story is available to Salt Lake Tribune subscribers only. Tabitha Jackson MC's the Sundance bonfire community gathering on Swede Alley, in Park City, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020. Finn Wolfhard and Julianne Moore star in "When You Finish Saving the World," directed by Jesse Eisenberg, an official selection of the Premieres section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

Jackson said Sundance has made tweaks in its social platform, to make the path into live Q&As smoother. For example, the Kanye West documentary “jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy” will be on Netflix. Amazon Studios is behind Amy Poehler’s documentary “Lucy and Desi.” And Joachim Trier’s already-acclaimed Norwegian romantic drama “The Worst Person in the World” — a safe bet for an Academy Award nomination in the International Film category — will be released in theaters in February.

In addition to the new short films, Sundance programmers have picked 40 shorts from past festivals to celebrate the Sundance Institute’s 40th anniversary. The classic shorts include works from filmmakers who have gone on to do big things, such as Destin Daniel Cretton , Tamara Jenkins and Taika Waititi .
