Bluntly put, alcohol raped my soul, tried to steal from me everything that I love, and almost killed me numerous times. I spent years in and out of meetings and treatment centers, and I went through multiple sponsors, psychologists and psychiatrists. Yet through it all, I managed to function at a high level, fueling a hellacious denial that drove me deeper and deeper into the abyss of my own despair.
Systems theory uses the analogy borrowed from evolutionary biology to explain otherwise inexplicable phenomena in diverse fields ranging from cybernetics to sociology to law. It holds that successful systems evolve so as to secure and perpetuate their own survival. The simpler the system, the more vulnerable it is to shocks that threaten to take down the system, while the more complicated and robust the system, the more capable it is of withstanding shocks.
International law is the paradigmatic customary law. There is even a form of international law explicitly called “customary international law.” It is a successful system because it exists. This may seem tautological, but it is not vacuous. Over time, international law has evolved to secure and perpetuate its own survival through rules that tilt toward peace and trade; for the opposite is total war and chaos — that is, the death of the system.
OK, let’s connect this theory to recovery. Imagine a system of only one relationship, say to one’s higher power. If a loved one dies, that relationship may be shaken or broken. And if that is the only relationship in one’s “recovery system,” it may lead to relapse.
